A slightly different test to the one already mentioned so thought I would post it.
To have an idea of what the temperature is in your Camp Oven and you don't have an oven thermometer handy - all you will need is a piece of newspaper or paper towel and 5 minutes. Place the paper inside the camp oven and check it after 5 minutes.
If the paper is black and smoking -
the oven is too hot.If the paper is light brown to yellow in colour -
the oven is moderate to hot.If the paper is cream or pale yellow colour -
the oven is slow to moderate. If it has not changed colour -
the oven is cold as you have forgotten to put it in the coals. As a rough guide:A 'slow' oven has a temperature of around 150 degrees Celsius, or approximately 300 degrees Fahrenheit. A slow oven is often used for stews and casseroles.
A 'moderate' oven has a temperature of around 180 degrees Celsius, or approximately 350 degrees Fahrenheit. A moderate oven is the most common temperature in cooking, and is used for many dishes.
A 'hot' oven has a temperature of around 200 degrees Celsius, or approximately 390 degrees Fahrenheit. A hot oven is often used where a short cooking time is required or for browning, such as pizzas, biscuits or pies.
A 'very hot' oven has a temperature of around 230 degrees Celsius, or approximately 450 degrees Fahrenheit. A very hot oven is good for charring things to an inedible blackened crisp.
