PostSubject: Barney Beach, Gladstone.   Sat Jan 02, 2010 6:01 am

I spent a week here in September 2008 with my son. The main reason we came here was so my son could practice some of his skills at the BMX park. This meant I was going to be on my own and therefore I wanted a peaceful/ tranquil park and Barney Beach really did fit the bill.

As one of the first caravan parks established in Queensland, it has been owned and operated by the Corones family and it still is. Kathy Corones was very helpful and polite during the extent of our stay.

There is the usual pool, camper kitchen and laundry facilities but what gives this park its particular appeal is the tropical setting within the park itself; even the ablution blocks have louvered windows so don't stand too close when showering.

The park is next to Barney Beach (hence the name) and this beach is netted so no probs from stingers. There is also a butchers and general store across the road which we found very handy.

The park itself is quite small and even if you have a drive-thru site you will need to reverse one or two times before you line up with the annexe pad. You will also have to unhitch even if you're there just overnight. Having said that most sites have plenty of shade and it really is a cosy park.

My only whinge is that the smell from the processing plants can become a concern if you're an asthmatic. I'm not, but the smell did get a little overpowering one day. Also, due to the location, you need to use your vehicle to get to town. Barney Beach is a lovely spot but it is a few kilometres into the town centre.

Prices were pretty good although it has gone up to $29 but you get 10% off if you are a Big 4 member.
